Who I am
한국계 미국인 지휘자 김건은 2022년부터 창원시립교향악단의 예술감독 겸 상임지휘자로 재직하며 오케스트라의 예술적 도약을 이끌고 있다.
15세에 지휘자의 길에 들어선 그는 세계적인 거장 로린 마젤로부터 “예술가 중의 예술가”라는 극찬을 받으며 일찍이 음악적 재능을 인정받았다. 창원시립교향악단과 함께 시벨리우스 교향곡 전곡을 비롯해 스메타나의 나의 조국, 쇼스타코비치의 ‘전쟁과 평화’ 시리즈를 성공적으로 완주하며 깊이 있는 해석과 대담한 기획력으로 주목받고 있다.
김건은 브루노 발터 국제 지휘자상을 수상하며 국제 무대에 이름을 알렸고, 내셔널 심포니 오케스트라, 볼티모어 심포니 오케스트라, 내슈빌 심포니 오케스트라 등 미국을 대표하는 주요 악단을 객원 지휘하였다. 또한 폴란드의 킬체 필하모닉, 영국의 브리튼-피어스 오케스트라, 캐나다의 내셔널 아츠 센터 오케스트라 등 세계 유수의 오케스트라를 지휘하며 폭넓은 국제적 활동을 이어가고 있다.
제8회 그제고시 피텔베르크 국제 지휘 콩쿠르 입상을 통해 지휘자로서의 음악성과 예술성을 다시 한번 입증한 그는, 라비니아 페스티벌과 아스펜 뮤직 페스티벌, 베르비에 페스티벌 등 세계적인 음악제에 초청받아 활발히 활동해 왔다. 아울러 북미 주요 오케스트라인 오리건 심포니 오케스트라에서 Conductor in Residence 로 활동하며 음악적 역량을 더욱 확장시켰다.
2026년 시즌에는 엄선된 솔리스트들과 함께 한국 최초로 카롤 시마노프스키의 교향곡 전곡 시리즈의 끝을 바라보며, 새로운 레퍼토리 지평을 여는 의미 있는 행보를 이어갈 것이다.
Korean American conductor, Paul Ghun Kim, has served as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Changwon Philharmonic Orchestra since 2022. With the Changwon Philharmonic Orchestra, Kim has led several large-scale projects, including the complete Sibelius symphony cycle, Smetana’s Má vlast, and Shostakovich’s “War and Peace” series.
He began conducting at the age of 15 and was recognized early in his career by conductor Lorin Maazel.
Kim is a recipient of the Bruno Walter International Conductors Award and has appeared as a guest conductor with major American orchestras such as the National Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Nashville Symphony Orchestra. His international engagements also include the Kielce Philharmonic in Poland, the Britten–Pears Orchestra in the United Kingdom, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Canada.
He was a prizewinner at the 8th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Conducting Competition and has participated in international festivals including the Ravinia Festival, Aspen Music Festival, and Verbier Festival. Kim has also served as Conductor in Residence with the Oregon Symphony Orchestra.
In the 2026 season, he will complete Korea’s first full cycle of Karol Szymanowski’s symphonies.
